Looking into History:

Wandering around ruins was probably one of my favorite parts of the trip. You are allowed to climb, run, discover, everything but take a piece home. It was pretty stunning to try and picture people living in these places more than 2000 years ago, walking the streets, leaning up against the walls for the shade, shouting for attention in the marketplace, lining up to pray at the temples. Amazing stuff. Looking into History:

Run To the Light:

The bunker system we visited on the Golan Heights hadn’t seen active service in a long time I imagine. It was sort of surprising to see how old and nasty it felt in there compared to the thousands of year buildings we had been in before.
I saw this shot on my way out of the bunker, and so I kept running in the exit, holding the camera on wide angle as near my center as I could, fiddling with a longer exposure and running towards the exit. I got a few I really liked, and this is one. It feels like the corridors from the movie Alien to me. :P Run To the Light:

Bunkered Down:

This is part of the area in the Golan Heights that tourists are allowed to visit. When we were walking up to the bunker system, we passed Rahm Emanuel and his security detail coming down the path. We gave them a wide berth. Bunkered Down:

Corinthian:

This is a pillar that once was part of a shrine to the god Pan, in a place called Banias. There are several styles of columns, and this one (as you may have guessed) is called Corinthian, very stylized and decorated, suitable for religious places.
One thing thats odd about historical locations in other countries is how open they are. If this was in in the states, it would be under glass, or at least have a fence around it. If I had wanted to, I could have stood on top of this one. It was just standing out in the middle of the area, no boundaries around it. I never quite got used to that. Corinthian:

Reverence:

This museum was dedicated to the brave pioneers who returned to Israel as part of the Zionist movement, farming, protecting and building. The photos all reminded me of the photos we americans get out of the wild west and the great depression. Strong eyes glaring out of haggard faces, daring the viewer to try and take what they have build out of the dust. Tired men and fearless women, holding agriculutural tools and weapons, ready to harvest crops or lives. It was quite moving, and really amazing to see what they did. What was even more amazing is how recent all this was. Many of these brave souls still live, and it’s not surprising to me anymore how dear the Israelis hold their land. You have to respect that. Stairway to…:

I have a habit of wandering around when I’m in a location, and sometimes I hit pay dirt. We were in a museum for a 2000 year old boat, and I couldn’t find a good shot anywhere in the main exhibit hall… so I wandered into some rooms that I believe were closed, and found this unfinished room that will be a gallery. I set up in the middle, I don’t remember if there were any flashes involved, but I really like the results.
So wander around. :D Stairway to…:
