I felt very peaceful in the bamboo… I wish I had a video camera and could have captured them swaying against one another… it was pretty neat.

Every once in a while, a flower just takes my breath away.
This was one of those.

I hope you all had a wonderful fourth of July! As usual I have a good number of neat fireworks shots… I’ll share them after this botanical gardens set is done.

This is a 5 or 6 image panorama, I’m standing behind the grate where the lake dumps out to get this angle.

When I lined up this shot for the first time, I was adjusting the exposure and the wind kicked up the leaves and threw them across the path. I wasn’t fast enough on the draw, so I had Bo throw the leaves across the path for me. I think he actually kicked the litter in this shot.

I had a great time shooting with my good friend Bo at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens yesterday afternoon… I got a few really cool shots which I will uploading over the next few days.
For this shot, I was trying to get a feel for the depth and texture of walking in among bamboo. There is light filtering down… motion from the wind… and always the verticality of the largest of the grass family. In retrospect, trying to compose a few of the shoots up front would have made a stronger image, but I still like this one.
What do you see?
Strobist: SB-900 with a full blue “special FX” gel hitting the background. It bounced off enough to backlight the smoke…

Smoke is such a strange substance. Organic, mineral, symbolism of things dead and alive, a sign of destruction and an icon of worship. No wonder it’s fascinated artists for years.

This one happened by pure chance, but I had to keep it of course. Smoke is really neat, I’d like to try it again. I understand the best method is to use incense smoke, because it produces a very steady stream for a good while.

Tomorrow… you’ll see what I did with this candle + fire! But for today, enjoy a weird way of getting a very high contrast B&W.
